Statement of the Government of the Czech Republic on the current situation in Tibet

The Government of the Czech Republic and the Czech public traditionally place a high emphasis on the protection of human rights, fundamental human freedoms, and the preservation of cultural and religious heritages worldwide. Therefore the Government of the Czech Republic is observing the situation in Tibet, which has claimed many lives and caused many injuries, with deep concern. The Government denounces the violence against those who have been coming to freely express their opinion and demands that the violence be stopped immediately.
The Government of the Czech Republic demands that the non-violent protestors arrested be released and that they not be exposed to humanly undignified treatment.
The Government of the Czech Republic is asking the Government of the People's Republic of China to allow free access to objective information on the situation in Tibet. Most crucial to reaching this aim is allowing representatives of independent media into the area and discontinuing the censorship of information.
The Government of the Czech Republic appeals to the Government of the People's Republic of China, that it not resort to a violent solution of the situation after the end of the (Monday's) "ultimatum", but that it be solved through dialogue in which it is desirable to invite H.H. Dalai Lama.

Prohlášení vlády České republiky k aktuální situaci v Tibetu 17.3.2008
Vláda ČR a česká veřejnost tradičně kladou velký důraz na ochranu lidských práv, základních svobod a na ochranu kulturního a náboženského dědictví v celém světě. Vláda ČR proto sleduje události v Tibetu, které si vyžádaly řadu zraněných a obětí na životech, s hlubokým znepokojením. Vláda odsuzuje násilí na demonstrantech, kteří přicházejí svobodně projevit svůj názor a žádá jeho okamžité zastavení.
Vláda ČR žádá propuštění preventivně zadržených osob a žádá, aby nebyly vystavovány lidsky nedůstojnému zacházení.
Vláda ČR žádá vládu ČLR, aby umožnila svobodný přístup k objektivním informacím o tom, co se v Tibetu děje. Nezbytným krokem k naplnění tohoto cíle je umožnění přístupu zástupců nezávislých médií do oblasti a zrušení cenzury na informace.
Vláda ČR apeluje na vládu Čínské lidové republiky, aby po vypršení “ultimáta“ nepřistoupila k násilnému řešení situace a řešila ji dialogem, ke kterému je žádoucí přizvat i Jeho Svatost dalajlámu.
